This girl needs a different head piece and more life in her eyes! Otherwise, I’m digging the porcupine quill accent on the arm chain.

One of my favorite moments in Africa happened when I was walking from my tent across the compound and was stopped by a gardener/farmer. In broken Swahili and broken English, we exchanged a few words about the birds in the tree. He stopped for a second, made the “I have an idea” finger-point, and disappeared behind a tree for a second. A moment later, he returned with a porcupine quill and handed it over to me. After many broken “asante-sanas” and bowing and eye contact, he kissed me on the check and frolicked away.

It’s still one of the most favorite things I own.
